This week I assembled this silly baby, Sebby by Cassie Brace. I started painting this sculpt last year when I was just figuring things out. I set it aside after getting frustrated with my trial and errors on the hair and sealing process. After stripping the paint on his head and starting over for the second time, I am relatively pleased with the final results. Yay, for completing Baby #7 for the doll show!
Originally, I got down in the dumps over the outcome of this one. In general, the skin tone is too warm orange for my liking, but I did learn more about my materials and how they interact with my sealing process, so I know how to avoid my mistakes next time. I find that with medium to darker skin tones in the RebornFX line, the saturation of color will change when using the sealer from the same brand. I'll also have to be careful on my pigment powder mixes, making sure they don't pull too warm, because the overall results will be overdone on color.
Once Sebby was done and I waited for his paint to cure, I thought I'd post him for sale; not feeling like my boo boo baby was good enough to take with me to the doll show. I had a change of heart after assembly and seeing him all dressed up! This is an opportunity for people to see my growth as a new artist. What better way to do that than to show some of my work and how it has evolved. It was quite a "Wow!" moment being able to see Sebby and my newer work Miley, side by side. Miley is a more recent version of my lighter skin toned African American baby, and what customers can expect now when choosing this skin tone.
I truly believe there is a collector for every doll; flaws and all! I'm confident Sebby will find the right one for him at the show this summer.
On another note, I am very happy with how his hair came out! This was my first attempt trying a curlier hair pattern with my Prismacolor pencil drawing method. I think it's pretty and I look forward to doing it again in other hair color shades in the future.
